Take a hike with a naturalist and trained botanist to learn the names of PNW flora, fungi, fauna.

NWN's Fall Season Naturalist Hiking Class will focus on mushroom ecology, plant-fungi symbiosis and parasitism, wildlife track and sign, and more! We will forage for mushrooms as opportunities arise.

This is the perfect class for hikers of any skill level, including beginners and would be a wonderful gift to give yourself or a loved one this fall and winter.

You will feel a sense of rejuvenation from these outings as you get outside and learn more about your home here in the coastal northwest.

What to expect:

  • Hike beautiful landscape (expect some elevation gain but with frequent breaks)

  • Learn how to identify mushrooms, plants including PNW trees, birds, and wildlife track and sign.

  • Learn the secrets of each species identified - ethnobotany, ecological role, folklore, medicinal uses, edibility/toxicity, and more

  • Make new friends

  • Connect with nature

  • Receive tips on foraging, medicine-making, cooking, and finding target species, and practice nature photography.

Details and driving directions will be sent to registered participants. Field trips will take place on public or private land in Whatcom or Skagit Counties.

Exact details will be sent to registered participants within the week before the event.

What to Bring:

  1. Dress for the weather - wear hiking boots or comfortable shoes.

  2. Snacks/lunch

  3. Water

  4. Trekking poles (optional)

  5. Foraging bag (optional)

  6. Notepad and pen (optional)

  7. Camera (optional)
